Space Shuttle $1 Gold Coin
The United States Mint has recently unveiled a new addition to its American Innovation $1 Coin Program: a gold coin commemorating NASA’s Space Shuttle program, representing the state of Florida. The Space Shuttle $1 gold coin, released in spring 2025, is the 28th in the series, which honors significant innovations across the United States.
The reverse of the coin features a detailed depiction of a NASA space shuttle lifting off from Kennedy Space Center’s Launch Complex 39. The design captures the shuttle’s ascent, surrounded by billowing smoke from its solid rocket boosters and a backdrop of stars. This imagery symbolizes Florida’s pivotal role in the nation’s space exploration efforts.

The obverse side, common to all coins in the series, showcases a profile of the Statue of Liberty, designed by artist Craig Campbell. Additionally, a stylized gear privy mark is included, representing industry and innovation.
Florida’s selection for this coin highlights its integral role in the Space Shuttle program, which conducted 135 missions from 1981 to 2011. The state’s Kennedy Space Center served as the launch site for these missions, many of which concluded with landings back in Florida.
The Space Shuttle program was notable for its reusability and significant achievements, including deploying the Hubble Space Telescope and contributing to the construction of the International Space Station. However, it also faced tragedies, most notably the Challenger and Columbia disasters, which resulted in the loss of 14 astronauts.
The American Innovation $1 Coin Program, initiated in 2018, aims to celebrate the ingenuity and contributions of each U.S. state and territory. Florida’s coin joins a series that has previously honored various innovations, such as the Hubble Space Telescope (Maryland, 2020) and the Saturn V rocket (Alabama, 2024).
The Space Shuttle gold coin is available for purchase through the U.S. Mint’s official website. Collectors and enthusiasts can acquire the coin in various formats, including uncirculated rolls and bags. This release not only honors Florida’s contribution to space exploration but also serves as a tangible reminder of the nation’s ongoing commitment to innovation and discovery.
