In 2025, the Royal Mint will commemorate the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day (VE Day), a momentous event in the history of the United Kingdom and its allies during World War II. This special milestone will be honored with the release of a range of commemorative VE Day coins. These gold and silver proof coins, meticulously crafted by the Royal Mint, will not only serve as a tribute to the soldiers, civilians, and leaders who played a pivotal role in securing peace but also offer collectors a chance to own a piece of history.

VE Day, celebrated on May 8, 1945, marked the official surrender of Nazi Germany to the Allied forces, bringing an end to the war in Europe. The day was a moment of immense joy, relief, and solemn reflection as the world celebrated the defeat of tyranny while honoring those who had lost their lives in the conflict. In the UK, VE Day has become synonymous with national unity, remembrance, and resilience.

The 80th anniversary of VE Day in 2025 will undoubtedly bring a renewed sense of national pride and reflection. To mark the occasion, the Royal Mint has chosen to issue a series of coins that will capture the spirit of the time and provide a lasting tribute to those who contributed to the victory.

The commemorative coins are set to be available in both gold and silver, each struck to the highest proof quality. The coins will feature distinctive designs that capture the essence of VE Day and its historic significance.

Whereas the reverse side of the coins depicts the image of a dove of peace accompanied by Winston Churchill‘s words IN PEACE GOODWILL, the portrait of HM King Charles III can be seen on the obverse side of the coins as is customary for coins issued by the Royal Mint.

Each coin is a piece of art in its own right, capturing the spirit of an era marked by both suffering and triumph. The attention to detail, particularly in the way the designs incorporate symbols of national pride, make these coins a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made for the freedoms enjoyed today.

The commemorative gold and silver proof coins will be available in a range of sizes, catering to different tastes and budgets. Whereas the 15.5 gram gold proof coins, of which a select 90 are available with a special privy mark, were minted out of 22-carat gold, the silver proofs were minted in the sizes of 8 grams as well as 16 gram Piedfort coins, all out of 92.5% pure Sterling silver. The mintage numbers are capped for each type of coin and it is interesting to note that all coin versions have the same face value of 50 Pence and diameter of 27.3 mm. The coins are packaged in special cases and accompanied by numbered certificates of authenticity.

For those who want to own a tangible piece of history, the Royal Mint’s VE Day commemorative coins offer an exceptional opportunity. Each coin tells the story of a day that changed the world, providing a lasting tribute to the courage, unity, and resilience that defined the era.

As the UK and the world reflect on the 80th anniversary of VE Day, these commemorative coins that can be purchased online from the Royal Mint’s webshop will serve as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made during the war and the importance of peace. Whether for personal reflection or as an investment in a piece of numismatic history, the coins issued by the Royal Mint are set to be a meaningful and enduring tribute to one of the most significant events of the 20th century.
